Sorry to keep you in suspense, but I rebooked the test for during the week. I don't have much to do but I'm nearly burnt out from fitting in all this around work and family life. I sorted my Pierburg carb out last night and she's idling nice and low, need to patch the rear silencer and then she'll be quiet too. I also fixed my reg light, which had a corroded contact on the spade connector of the earth wire and a blown bulb.

This is where I found a working caliper that I reconditioned into service,

Got her to the test and passed. Finally have three discs in the window allthough ready for a new tax one. In answer to Austinc's question I got NCT until March 2012. March is it's month of first registration.

So restoration over, maintenance and repairs begin.

Could be because it missed an Nct in the past. Mine hadn't been done since 2004, so when I passed in January 2011 I was given until March 2012, March is the cars month of first registration.

one of the pics where the wheels are SR on back and GTE on front reminds me of when i upgraded the brakes on my mk1 1.6D and the SR wheels wouldn't fit the cav brakes laughing

Since my title was Rolling Resto, and that's really what I'm doing now, I've decided to resurrect this thread. The car is being used daily, is roadworthy but still has plenty of work needed to tidy it up. Progress has slowed since I got it on the road and have been enjoying it. It's a bit of an exercise in Bangernomics with me. The car came to me cheap 10 years ago so it doesn't owe me anything and it's something I can repair myself. I've built up loads of spares over the years and it's amazing what you can get off ebay for peanuts. The car mightn't be much to look at but there's some great components in there and the handling of these cars is just second none. It's addictive.

My fuel gauge hasn't worked since 2004. Since then I've always had to fill up and work out my consumption against the mileage. I bought a MOPROD fuel level sender unit off ebay around Christmas last year for about €15 and then lost it. I didn't look for it as I knew it would turn up eventually and it wasn't essential to the running of the car. I have to admit though it was getting to be a bit of a headache the more I use the car. It turned up last week while I had been keeping a bit more of an eye out for it. I had a spare couple of hours today. So I stuck it in and to my delight the needle rose. big grin It's the small things in life isn't it.

Got a handy fuel cap from a company called race-parts off ebay and fitted it.

It developed a leaky slave cylinder, but I actually had a new one on my spares shelf that I got cheap a while ago. I will need to get a new set of shoes soon but I just ordered a middle exhaust section, so that will have to wait. Enjoying having a fuel guage.

With a working fuel guage added to the already working speedometer and battery oil light and water temperature guage I decided to go for a few more dials. I had damaged the white back of the instrument cluster a couple of years ago while taking the car for a test run without a dash. It fell from the steering column onto the then carpetless floor and cracked all around the back of the rev counter and was held together with tape until now. I had a very rough cluster from an old SR but the white back section was intact on this so I stripped it last Tuesday evening and took out all the dials from my own dash and fitted them into it. I put this into the car and only the speedo was working now. A few of the copper tracks on the back had gone brittle and cracked so I had a bit of time this evening and soldered wires in to link up all the sections. I fitted it back in the car and hey presto now I have everything I started with plus rev counter, ammeter and some more back lighting. I've got to renew those bulbs next and look for the oil pressure sender unit for that guage to complete the set. It's like getting all the lights on the Christmas tree to work. Very satisfying.

As I said back in October 2010 I'd get a new middle box when I get it on the road. Well now I've proven to be a man of my word. After nearly a year on the road I was getting close to spending more on welding wire than the price of the new exhaust so I ordered one off ebay and got a chance to fit it today. Only a bit quieter as back box isn't great so might order that after Christmas, still it's less blowy. I think I'll concentrate a bit on the under body over the holidays so it looks good on the inspectors ramp in the new year. There's a bit of surface rust which is easy if dealt with now.

This engine has never run very smoothly for me but lately i've been having some cutting out problems and finally decided it was time to get rid of the Kadett E Pierburg carb with a very restricted inlet manifold, I've been using for years and try out the twin choke webber I have on a decent manifold. I fitted it thanks to an adaptor plate I got from Garyc from the forum. Well once I'd cleaned the jets and float chambers and made a new throttle linkage she fired up and now idles sweet as a nut and cruises at a steady rev I'm delighted smile . I feel after a year the project is maturing. Back to full time use again. The Talbot camper has been taking up the slack recently and deserves a break.

I always think it's great when the little annoying faults you live with on a car finally get sorted. Excellent stuff Kadett, bet it feels like a different car to drive with the idling and cruising fine!
