put your car in neutral
undo the pinch bolt on gear linkage by the selector
pull out this plug (some newer gearboxs have a plug you can push to lock in place and have a spring on them)

on an f10 or f16 you need a 5mm drill bit on f20 you need 4.5mm but a 4mm will probably do
put bit into hole

whilst looking towards the front of the car twist the selector anti clockwise, this will only twist if it is in neutral. it only twists about 30 degrees.
whislt twisting selector, push the drill bit in and it should go in an extra 1 cm and that is locked.
go back to the gear stick and line it up like so (page 102 haynes)

it's easier if someone holds gearstick in this position.
then tighten pinch bolt at selector
remove drill bit and replace plug _________________ 1983 5dr project 1.4Ti in china blue
