hi guys,

thought i'm come and ask in the right place this difficult question,

i'm going to worthersee this year in 2 weeks actually and the car i was taking has pissed me off to the point i am refusing to take it, so this has left me with the option of finding a new car in the next week but i can't find anything that i like the look of or....... do i take the astra??

the question being would any of you guys trust your astra for a road trip that is going to consist of around 2700 miles...

the way i see it, the car itself, brakes, suspension etc would all be good, it's the engine, i have a redtop on 45's. the issues i can foresee are fuel pump packing up, carbs shitting them selfs or just it generally dying

would it be something you would consider

I did a 2500 mile round trip to Italy in my old white LET powered GTE about 20 years ago and I loved it , so yes , I would consider it , can't see as the
carbs should be a problem tbh

I took my let gte to the ring and back with no drama, ok slightly less miles, but was a pleasant drive none the less smile

I'd take the car myself personally. If anything did go wrong just consider it part of the adventure, plus you never know who you might meet or might help you out.

Doing a 2500 mile journey in a mk1 is just cool

Fit the standard injection system, it will only take a couple of hours and you'll have a reliable car.

cheers for all your input guys, but i decided to drag my BMW E28 out of the shed and strip down and re-build it in 7 days for the trip haha,,

believe me that was a interesting week as she's been off the road since 2002 and had a full overhaul, repairs, some paint, audio, suspension, wheels etc..

i'm now down in worthersee austria and its epic, although i do kinda wish the astra was here as it would have gone down a treat

so as of last monday (bank holiday) the E28 was put back onto 4 wheels loaded onto the truck and moved into his garage for assessment and the beginning of a 7 day overhaul and lack of sanity/sleep..

i won't go into to many details but as the car has been off the road since 2002 the list of items we decided would be wise to change was relatively substantial and we have no gaurentee at the end of it if the car will still be up to the challenge..

So the parts list isn't too bad actually some things don't need doing but were choosing too,

All fluids engine, gearbox and diff
all filters, air, fuel and oil
Aux belts
Water pump
Fuel pump
Thermostat
Drop links
Brake pads
repair/replce Brake lines and Fuel lines
New Exhaust was the plan but i could only convince the guys to repair and strengthen the original system and add some tail pipes within the timescale.
replace clutch master cylinder,
full brake and clutch bleed with new fluid,
check all electrics as some were not working

Got 4 patches to weld on the cills, this is all the rust/grot on the car so not to bad as it has never been welded before

next up was to somehow convince a friend/painter that he needed a weekend challenge so i dragged him on board the party boat

Painting rear quarters, boot, passenger door, drivers front wing and front splitter, all these panels have various dents, bad paint of scabs of rust. we also removed the spoiler and welded up the mounting holes.

Installing new headunit, All new audio cabling front components, sub and amps. well you can't go on a road trip with no tunes and only the misses to listen too

Interior fully removed and wet vac'd

rear wheels to be spilt down and made narrower,

4 wheel alignment,
